Marshmallow

Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial herb that’s native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It’s been used as a folk remedy for thousands of years to treat digestive, respiratory, and skin conditions. Marshmallow root has antibacterial activity that may make it effective in wound healing. Marshmallow, Althaea officinalis abundant in Middle Eastern and many other countries is commonly prescribed by herbal medicine practitioners in Lebanon for inflammation, gastritis, and common cold. Reported literature revealed that the majority of studies which were shown to have antitussive action, anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant activity, hypoglycemic activity, and to increase the phagocytic activity of macrophages. Additional studies reported activity against periodontopathic facultative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and reduction of pigmentation by inhibiting endothelin-1-induced activation of normal human melanocytes.  Althaea officinalis has effective ingredients such as flavonoids of the polyphenols group, polysaccharides, mucins, antocyanins, and fiber. Marshmallow root also has the potential to act as a diuretic. Diuretics help the body to flush out excess fluid. This helps to cleanse the kidneys and the bladder.

The results of this study suggest that marshmallow root extract has the potential to treat gram-positive bacteria.  These bacteria are responsible for over 50 percent of the infections that occur and include antibiotic-resistant “super bugs”.  When applied topically, the extract significantly increased wound healing in comparison to antibiotic controls.  It is thought to speed up the healing time and reduce inflammation.
